Diamond engagement rings have been a long standing tradition. One that definitely isn’t going anywhere. Classic, elegant and durable, diamonds are the perfect choice for symbolizing a lasting relationship. When searching for your perfect ring, you might have some questions. Who started the diamond engagement ring tradition?

THE BEGINNING OF THE ENGAGEMENT RING TRADITION

The first engagement rings given were in Rome, and it wasn’t what your picture when you hear “engagement ring.” The Romans simply used a plain, iron hoop. Those in higher social classes would sometimes replace the iron hoop with a simple gold band before going out in public. Before diamonds were popular in engagement rings, sapphires and rubies were often used. (Fun fact: rubies are just red sapphires!) It wasn’t until the 15th century that diamonds were used.

THE FIRST DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING

In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond engagement ring to Mary of Burgundy. Thus began the diamond engagement ring tradition. The reason the Archduke chose a diamond was because of its durability. To him, this symbolized a lifelong relationship. However, even this diamond engagement isn’t what you’re used to seeing. These early cut diamonds were sometimes black and lacked brilliance. To make up for the sometimes dull stones, goldsmiths would create settings with intricate designs.

THE PROGRESSION OF DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RINGS

Then, in the 18th century, diamonds were discovered in Brazil. This made diamonds much more accessible. Soon after, diamonds were also discovered in Africa. This discovery combined with the industrial revolution of the 19th century, ensured that diamonds became more common in engagement rings. It was also around this time that improvements were made in diamond cutting and polishing. This resulted in beautiful diamonds that could be put into solitaires.
