November’s Birthstones: Topaz & Citrine

Those born in November get to celebrate with not one, but two stunning birthstones: topaz and citrine. Between these two unique stones, November babies (and anyone else who loves these gemstones) can find a stone in just about every color out there!

Let’s dive into some fun facts about November’s birthstones!

Topaz:

  • Topaz comes in a large variety of different colors, so many that you could find a topaz stone to match every. single. outfit! You can find topaz in green, blue, pink, orange, yellow, violet, brown, and sometimes red!

  • Topaz is an 8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, but it has poor toughness so topaz stones require special care. To clean your topaz jewelry all you need to do is mix up some warm soapy water!

  • Brazil and Northwest Pakistan are big suppliers of the world’s topaz, but you can also find topaz right here in Utah! One of the popular spots in Utah to go topaz hunting is even called Topaz Mountain!

Citrine:

  • The GIA says, “Citrine is the transparent, pale yellow to brownish orange variety of quartz.”

  • Citrine is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Much like topaz, the best way to care for your citrine stone is to wash it with warm soapy water.

  • Citrine is the top selling yellow/orange gem due to its stunning color and its affordability!

  • Natural citrine is very rare. Most citrine stones on the current market are actually heat treated amethyst. Amethyst comes from the same quartz family and when you heat treat it, you get the warm citrine colors.
